Why We Use the McKenzie Method

What is the McKenzie Method?

The McKenzie Method, also known as MDT® (Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy), is a specialized form of physical therapy developed by Robin McKenzie, a renowned physiotherapist from New Zealand, in the 1950s. This approach emphasizes self-treatment and active patient involvement in the healing process. Widely recognized for its effectiveness, MDT® offers proven diagnosis and treatment strategies for various musculoskeletal conditions including low back pain, knee pain, neck pain, elbow pain, and more.

What is the McKenzie Method based on?

The McKenzie Method is based on the premise that many musculoskeletal conditions can be treated through a combination of postural awareness, exercises, and positioning. The goal of the method is to identify and correct mechanical problems in the musculoskeletal system that are causing pain, rather than simply treating the symptoms of the pain.

What are the benefits of the McKenzie Method?

One of the key benefits of the McKenzie Method is that it empowers patients to take an active role in their own recovery. Patients are taught exercises and self-treatment techniques that they can do at home to manage their pain and prevent future recurrences. This approach not only helps to speed up the recovery process but also helps to reduce the number of visits to a physio overall.

The Mckenzie Method is an effective system for patients who prefer a more active approach to their recovery. However, it's important to note that the effectiveness of any treatment method depends on a number of factors, including the nature and severity of the condition, the skill and experience of the therapist, and the commitment of the patient to follow through with the prescribed treatment plan.

When you work with a physiotherapist here at MUV Therapy, we empower you to take an active approach in the healing of your condition and give you the tools to make yourself better in between visits, which leads to a longer-lasting recovery as well as the knowledge to manage any future flare-ups should they occur.
